The Collaboratory Against Hate is now the Center for Applied Research on Targeted Violence (CARVt)

In a significant step towards addressing targeted violence, the Collaboratory Against Hate is relaunching with a new name and a renewed mission as the Center for Applied Research on Targeted Violence (CARVt).

This change reflects a commitment to addressing targeted violence through comprehensive applied research, aiming to understand and mitigate targeted violence stemming from group hatred. CARVt (pronounced “carve”) defines targeted violence as intentional acts of harm directed at specific individuals, groups, or entities, involving planned and purposeful aggression.

As a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, CARVt leverages the strengths of both institutions to advance the field of targeted violence prevention. Efforts include developing and supporting applied research, collaborating with industry, nonprofits, government, non-government organizations, and the philanthropic community. Additionally, CARVt supports the educational missions of both universities through various activities such as special events, a podcast, workshops, and more.

In September, CARVt was named a subgrantee of an FY24 Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships. The grant application, submitted by the Prevention Practitioners Network of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit, also includes CastleIRB as a partner. Together, these groups will launch the Technical Help and Resources for Interventions against Violent Extremism (THRIVE) program, which will focus on professionalizing and expanding the field of targeted violence prevention. Through this project, CARVt will provide data analysis to 35 nonprofits. Read more about the project here.

CARVt has been instrumental in various projects, including data analysis for federal grant projects and collaborations with leading nonprofits. CARVt will continue to build on its strong foundation of research and collaboration as a resource for government agencies, nonprofits, and communities nationwide, forging a path forward in the field of targeted violence.
